History

Bobojon Ghafurov District is named in honour of the eminent Tajik academician Bobojon Ghafurovich Ghafurov (1908–1977) — historian, orientalist and prominent statesman, author of the foundational work “The Tajiks”.

Ancient history

The territory of the modern district has, since antiquity, been part of the historic region of Sogdiana. According to archaeologists, monuments from the Achaemenid, Greco-Bactrian, Kushan, Sasanian and Samanid eras have been discovered here.

Soviet period

Khujand District was established in 1929. During the Soviet era, the district developed as an important centre of agriculture and light industry — cotton-ginning and textile enterprises were built, an extensive irrigation network was developed, and social infrastructure was expanded.

The period of state independence

In 1992, the administrative centre — the town of Sovetabad — was renamed in honour of Bobojon Ghafurov, whose life and scholarly career were closely linked with this region. Today the district is recognised as one of the largest and most socio-economically active in Sughd Region.

Historical landmarks and cultural heritage

Within the district there are the Mausoleum of Chashmai Mohien, the Arbob Museum (part of the Museum of Arbob-Era Culture), the ancient Khodjabokirgan fortress and other historical monuments. The collections of district museums preserve thousands of sculptures and archaeological artefacts.
